Shag Carpet-- A 3 Word Story Challenge #1

7/27/2016

... general idea. People on youtube give me 3 random words and every week I write a new story based on those words. This week's story is called SHAG CARPET. The words are: Door, Static, and Penny.

"You are a..." his words trailed off, but not the pain. No the pain seemed like it would radiate down his arm and through his fingers forever.

Either that or he was turning into a huge wimp. Imagine him, Carl Haskins, a huge wimp. At 6'4" and 300 pounds of muscle, there were other words men used to describe him.
One of those men looked at him now with tears in his eye.

Stupid door.
Stupid socks.
Stupid static.
Stupid Marty for showing up in the middle of the night.

Watch to hear the whole story. #CarlHaskinsIsGoodAtHisJob
There will be a new story next week. Be sure to subscribe! <3

Much Love,
Kelly

You are more than 'Just'

7/25/2016

Yesterday, something big and amazing happened. My books were placed for sale in a bookstore!

An actual bookstore.

Like, where they sell books!
Picture
from The Mad Raven facebook page
Being in a bookstore has been one of my biggest dreams ever. Yes, I cried. YES, I ate cake ;)

It also got me thinking about the
'JUST' in the world (there is a point to this.)

Think about the last time you did something that excited you, something that made you giddy, something that allowed you
to cross through one of your bucket list items. Now... think about how you told people about it...

Did you say, "I made it into college, but I just barely passed my test."
Or
"I hit #10 on Amazon! But it was just the free list."
Or
"I ran a mile today! But it was
just a slow run. Not fast yet."

Personally, I'm so tired of saying the word JUST to sell my point. To me, it seems like we are undermining our accomplishments because 1) we don't want to brag or 2) because we are afraid others won't see the value in it as we do.

This goes for everyone (author or not), but (since I'm friends with a lot of authors) I see it a lot in the community: I got an agent, but it's
just for one book. I hit my monthly royalty goal, but it's just $100. I finished my book, but it's just 50,000 words and not 75,000. My book hit #1 on Amazon, but it's just romance...

I'm guilty of it too... and it needs to stop.

Why do we do it?

Are we afraid of what other people will think of us?

Are we
worried they won't have the same reaction we do?

Are we
scared that people will think we've gotten 'too big for our britches' or 'high and mighty' or 'changed' if we don't downplay our accomplishments?

Are we
scared of people thinking we  are bragging?

Are we
afraid of the judging look or the 'bless your heart, you think you've done something special' when we are so happy to meet one of our goals?

{So much
fear}

TRUTHFULLY, no one will ever be as excited for you as you are anyway. So all this fear we have about what others think won't matter a hill of beans (as we say here in the South-- I don't know what it means either ;) )

Do you use words like
just and only when you tell people about things you've done? If so, leave me a comment and we can talk about it (because I need to talk lol). I don't want to use words like Just and Only anymore (and if you see me doing it, call me out). I think we should be proud of what we are doing, get a high five if we need it, and go on...

~Kelly
Just a writer ;)

State of Kelly Address

7/18/2016

Hello friends and neighbors,

I thought long and hard about what I wanted to write about today, and it seemed fitting to do a 'State of Kelly' Address.

What in the world does that mean?

It means that I thought it would be good to let y'all into my mind a little bit ("But Kelly, we've read Heartless... we may not want in there...") Good point, well, here is the non-freaky part of my mind ;)

Last month, I released my 6th book/novella in 7 months. I know some authors who publish more than that... I know a lot who haven't published six books in three years. That's not the point lol

The point is my mind is erupting with story ideas. I just plotted out a huge story last night (that will cover several books) and I still have Reckless to write (I'm writing on it now. I'll have  a release date for you soon. YES, it'll be this fall :) )

My mind is full of all these stories that I can't wait to get to you guys... but my heart... my heart is kinda tired. *Insert your eye roll here*-- I understand-- This business is so hard. It is hard work AND it is hard on the old nerves. One day you can be riding high and the next you want to curl up in a ball and never leave. And no, sales are NOT the only deciding factor (in fact you can feel like never writing another book again on a GOOD sales day). I think most (all) writers have this sense of "Oh my land.... what have I done?" And that through is worse on some days than others.

I am so grateful to have the Nerd Group to help on those days... and they don't even know it. Yesterday, we watched the X-files episode HOME together (I know... I know). It is nice to have things like that, a community of people who support you and who hopefully feel I support them. We've love to have you if you want to join...

Anyway,

I've also been thinking about self-publishing and the stigmas behind it. I've heard a few this past week that sort of got to me... I think I might do a youtube series on it. I'm not sure. I'm kinda in a unique situation where I've been traditional/small press published and indie.
Would I love a 'Big 5' contract? Heck, yeah!
Do I want to keep writing stories? Absolutely.
Do I know where the future goes? Not in the least.

*If you are a self-published author, what sort of things have you heard about yourself/self-publishing as a whole?

*If you are a traditional author, what stigmas have you heard about yourself?

*If you are a reader, what do you think of indie books in general?

All of these things will help me figure out what I want to talk about. AND I'm NOT going to whine lol. That's not what this is about "Ohhhhhhhhhh... it's so hard. Pity me!" No! I want to focus on the good, the bad, and the ugly. I want to help folks who maybe need help... and maybe some who don't ;)

BASICALLY, the state of Kelly is a rambly mess.

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE:
Reckless (fall 2016)
Breast Cancer Anthology (fall... I think... 2016)
Carnival surprise (2017)
After that???? Who knows?

Thank you for reading the confusing State of Kelly. I've actually had an amazing year and this is the FIRST year that I haven't taken a little break from writing. Breaks are good. I should look into that. ;)

Love y'all <3

Who doesn't love to scroll through Amazon or Pinterest and look at all the pretty book covers? I know I'm not the only one. There are entire boards (hundreds of them) dedicated to the art and beauty of book covers. Today, I've picked a color (purple because it is my favorite color... what? You thought it was black or gray ;) ) and found book covers that go with that color.

This is all part of the #FF (Feature and Follow) blog hop started on
parajunkee.com.

If you have a blog, hop over and check this hop out. It is really cool and you get to gawk at all sorts of amazingly beautiful book covers.

ALSO, I'm giving away an anatomical heart ring.

Down the Rabbit Hole of Binge Watching (or When Netflix Steals Your Life)

7/3/2016

Recently (okay, 2 weeks ago), I sat down and turned on Netflix. Now, I watch Netflix at lot (who can forget the Supernatural binge of 2015 or the American Horror Story binge over Christmas... yes nothing says Christmas like American Horror Story...). But THIS time, I had no intention of binge watching anything.

If you don't know me, I write-- a lot. I've had 6 books/novellas come out in the last 7 months. Basically, when I'm at the computer, my fingers are moving (sans the writer's blog of 2015-- hence all the Supernatural watching).

One night, I had written all I wanted to write for the day, and a scene popped in my mind. Now, they weren't MY scenes. I never wrote them, but I'd watched them many times.

*Screen Shot from Memento Mori/Season 4*

... So, as anybody does, I looked up to see if The X-Files was on Netflix.
And it was.

And I watched that episode.

And the one before it (because I couldn't remember what had happened).

And then the two in the next (5th) season (because I wanted to know what happened with the cancer).

And then I watched the one where Scully is taken by Donnie Pfaster (because I remembered it for some reason).

And then I watched one with Nicholas Lea's Krycek (because he's Alex Krycek.)

And then I watched a monster-of-the-week one (Bad Blood)

And then I was all, "I think I remember an Emily." So I watched Emily.

*ScreenShot from Emily*

I should mention, these episodes were over a few days. I didn't watch that many at one setting.

Until, one night I got the notion to start at the beginning...

*SCREENSHOT from the first episode*

Six episodes later, it occurred to me that I was indeed binge watching The X-Files.

I know... I'm slow.

Does that ever happen to you? Like you don't plan for it to happen. You just click, then click, and click again, and before you know it, you are neck deep in a conspiracy with aliens and the shadow government all the while trying to hide your sexual chemistry with your partner...

No? Just me? Okay then.

What are you watching on Netflix? Hulu? DVR? I love Destination America too, and Sundays are normally my ghost hunting show fix-- except this Sunday. When I'll be watching The X-Files. Robert Patrick Modell is being all pushy ;)

Kelly Martin writes paranormal, contemporary, historical, and YA fiction. She has been married for over ten years and has three rowdy, angelic daughters. When she's not writing, she loves taking picture of abandoned houses, watching horror gamers on YouTube-- even though she's a huge wimp-- and drinking decaf white chocolate mochas. She's a total fangirl, loves the 80s and 90s, and has a sad addiction to paranormal TV shows. {Basically, she likes creepy stuff.} Her favorite characters are the very flawed 'good guys'--and 'bad guys' who don't know they are evil. She loves giving her readers books with unexpected twists and turns, but (here's a hint) most of her books have the ending spelled out in the first chapter. See if you can figure it out.
